What Is a Pave Setting in Engagement Rings?
Pave is pronounced as "pah-vay." This means "paved" in French. It is known for its structure or how it appears, a belt of tiny diamonds placed so closely together that the metal nearly vanishes.
Every stone rests in a small metal prong or bead. The settings are completely invisible from a typical viewing distance; all that is visible is a continuous line of light along the band.
Micro-Pave vs French Pave
| Micro-Pave | French Pave |
| Stone size | Smaller, often under 0.01ct | Slightly larger |
| Metal showing | Minimal | V-shaped cuts beneath each stone |
| Effect | Dense, seamless sparkle | More light entering each diamond |
| Look | Smooth and uniform | Brighter, more dimensional |
French pave if you want maximum brilliance from the band, the V-cuts let light in from underneath. Micro-pave if you want the smoothest, most seamless line of stones.
How Pave Adds Sparkle
A solitaire sparkles from one point. Pave engagement rings sparkle along their whole length.
That matters more than it sounds. Your hand moves constantly, and a pave band catches light at angles the center stone can't reach on its own.
Pave engagement rings also flatter the center diamond. Small stones leading up to a larger one make the center read brighter and slightly bigger by contrast, which is why a diamond pave ring often looks like more ring than its carat weight suggests.
Can Pave Rings Be Resized?
Only within a limited range, usually about half a size either way.
This is the one real trade-off with pave engagement rings, and it's worth knowing before you buy. Diamonds run along the band, so a jeweler can only work with the plain metal underneath. Cutting into a pave section risks loosening stones.
Two things follow from that:
- Get the size right first. More important here than with a plain band.
- Check how far the pave runs. Stones covering half the band leave room to resize. A full pave eternity band can't be resized at all, it has to be remade.
We offer free resizing for 90 days, and we'll tell you honestly what a given ring can take.
Best Center Shapes for a Pave Band
A pave diamond ring works with every center shape. Some pairings are especially strong:
- Round: Classic sparkle from the center all the way down the band
- Oval: The pave line exaggerates the stone's length
- Emerald: Pave adds the brightness a step cut doesn't have on its own
- Cushion: Soft outline against a crisp line of stones
- Princess: Squared edges echo the geometry of the band
Caring for Pave Diamonds
Pave engagement rings need a little more attention than a plain band. Nothing difficult:
- Check for prongs every year: Once a year, check the prongs because with time, little metal beads may come loose.
- Clean it often: It may be cleaned with warm water, soap, and a gentle brush. The brilliance is usually dulled more quickly than on a plain band when dirt accumulates between pave stones.
- Take it off for the gym and heavy work: Knocks are what loosen pave.
Every pave engagement ring from Precious Carbon includes a lifetime manufacturing warranty covering manufacturing defects and repairs. In any case, if a stone becomes loose due to a setting issue, we'll fix it, but the warranty does not cover diamonds that have been lost.
